Although air service in India has been around since 1970; it hasn’t always been affordable or competitive with regards to fares and rates. It has only been approximately five years that reasonable airfares were offered for India. In 2003 the airline Air Deccan was formed and began flying passengers. In 2005 that name was changed simply to Deccan Airways. Air Deccan was the very first and was soon joined by others. Air India is an airline formed by merging seven of the largest airlines in India. These included Deccan Airways, Bharat Airways, Airways India, Himalayan Aviation, Indian National Airways, Kalinga Airlines, and Air Services of India. When this merger occurred, the company only had smaller planes in its fleet such as DC3′s. But now India Air is able to provide service using Boeing 737-200′s, Airbus 300′s, and Airbus 320′s just to name a few. Unlike other countries, the airlines in India are owned and operated by the government. In 2007 the Indian government formed a group known as Alliance Air. This later became known as the Star Alliance. In December 2007 Air India was invited and became a part of the Star Alliance. Air India provides service internationally at competitive rates. Their profit margin is smaller than other airlines, but that’s not because they aren’t making capitol. Air India invests its money back into the company to expand its fleet of aircraft and keep the company growing. Many of Air India’s passengers are traveling businessmen. Therefore it goes without saying that a large part of that would be the more luxurious aircraft. The Airbus is a well-appointed craft with many amenities to offer travelers. Typically businessmen are on an expense account and will need to travel by the least expensive means necessary without any sacrificing of comfort. The Airbus allows them to do this. In its prospective list of forthcoming purchases are more of the Airbuses. A total of sixty-seven were reported ordered in July 2008. (This count includes three different models of the Airbus.) Many things are on the minds of travelers when they prepare to book a flight. One thing is how much the flight is going to cost them. But when dealing with aircraft the key thing on the minds of passengers is safety. They want an affordable fare, but not at the cost of their lives. Air India’s record isn’t exactly the best when it comes to safety. My research showed a long list of crashes, many with fatalities. As with anything in life it is important to keep your priorities straight. Make sure your airfares aren’t literally to die for.
