All over the Internet and TV you see ads for popular services all claiming to get you the best deal for your dollar with regard to airline tickets. We’ve seen William Shatner do his bit for Priceline. We’ve seen the cute little gnome trying to get you to go to Travelocity. As you’re reading your E-mails you are annoyed by pop-ups of ads from places like Expedia, CheapTickets, and Momondo just to name a few. Which one is better than the others? Are there any of them better than the others? What determines the winner in these questions? In my research I’ve found that there really is no clear-cut answer to those questions. The services listed above vary from day to day. One day Priceline may be the hands down winner because it has not only the best price, but gives you a bonus as well. The next day it could be Travelocity that gets the kudos. So what makes these sites so popular? How can they give you tickets so cheap? Read on and learn a thing or two from one who’s been there. How do they attract customers? Easy, they promise cheapest prices around and even though the customer doubts it they’ll go to the site and see. Do they deliver on what they advertise? Yes and no. You see, when a consumer goes to one of those sites, they type in their info and it comes back with a price usually. Well the consumer then has the option of placing a bid on it to get it lower. For example, say a round trip ticket to California was quoted to you for two hundred dollars on the site. If you think that is high, you can offer whatever you think is fair for the ticket. Let’s say fifty bucks hypothetically. Well you submit your offer and it comes back and says denied, but gives you a counter of one hundred dollars. You think this is fair so you decide to take it. OK, you think you got yourself a bargain fare. Not yet you don’t. As you’re preparing to pay for the ticket, a pop-up window comes up offering to pay so much of it for you if you complete their offer. If you say no, usually they’ll say your ticket was sold. If you say yes you spend half the night completing offers before you have your ticket. Was it worth it? Are you spending a long time stressing just to save a few bucks? You be the judge.
