Our First Motorhome Hire

Motorhome HireOur first experience of motorhomes and indeed, motorhome hire, came in New Zealand four years ago when we went over there to celebrate my other half’s 50th birthday. As a child I had holidayed in static caravans and then from the age of four in a touring caravan around the UK. Later my brother had also continued caravanning in the UK and Europe with his young family. However, I developed more luxurious tastes and took to hotels as an adult.

However, when we came to looking at the number of places we wanted to see whilst in New Zealand and the advertised ease  of motor homing over there, I raised the suggestion to the ‘birthday boy’ and although never one for camping or caravans, we loved to idea for the freedom and the challenge.

So off we went to New Zealand to spend our first week on South Island in a motorhome.

It was easy to book – a 4 berth for the two of us to give us a little more room, and easy to research the chain of Top Ten Campsites, so popular in New Zealand. We didn’t want to chance free camping at such an early stage of our experience with the motorhome so we went for the campsites as they all advertised high quality facilities and good locations for our needs.

We collected our motorhome at Christchurch Airport and drove north to Kaikoura for whale watching; from there we went back to Christchurch to have the electricity cable replaced at the depot which was done without any fuss or great delay to our plans.

After a lovely day in sunny Christchurch punting on the river Cam, we left Christchurch to go through the Southern Alps, where we encountered hundreds of sheep being herded through a particular valley and experienced the joy of being surrounded on all sides by sheep as we tentatively made our way through them all. From the sunshine in Christchurch we stopped overnight near Twizel (an interesting place if ever there was one!) – Where we encountered snow!

The following day we continued our journey to Queenstown for the remainder of the week where we had a fantastic time and wonderful weather at a fantastic site within walking distance of town.

As a result I’d recommend both New Zealand AND motor homing to anyone thinking of giving either a chance!
